X Games History

The history of X Games started way back in 1993.  It started out in Los Angeles, California.  You will be surprised how the X Games evolved to be the world’s signature action sports brand.

In 1993, the ESPN management decided to create a concept wherein all action sports athlete would come together in an international gathering.  Then in 1994, at a press conference in Planet Hollywood in Ney York City, ESPN announced that Extreme Games will be happening in Rhode Island in June 1995, the following year.

So from June 1995 to July 1995, the Extreme Games (X Games) were happening.  To be exact, the Extreme Games (X Games) was located in Newport, Providence and Middletown, Rhode Island, and Mount Snow, Vermont.

All participating action sports athletes compete in 27 events and in 9 sport categories which includes biking, in-line skating, bungee jumping, eco-challenge, street luge, sky surfing, sport climbing, and water sports.

During that time, there were over 198,000 spectators.  All were present during the first ever Extreme Games (X Games).  Sponsors were likewise left and right.  From Advil, to Taco Bell, Mountain Dew to Nike, and even telecommunications company, AT&T, they were all present to be part of history.  You would be surprised with the way they showed their support to this new event at that time.

It would be good to note however that the name X Games was just later on established.  From 1993 to 1995, it was just called Extreme Games.  So in 1996, the name Extreme Games officially changed to X Games.  According to organizers, it allowed easier translation to international audiences and bigger and better branding.

In 1996 also, Winter X Games was born.  It was announced that the Winter X Games will be in January 1997 up to February.  Additionally, it will be televised in over 190 countries and be heard in 20 plus languages.  During this time too, ABC Sports broadcast an X Games event.

In 1997, X Trials was born.  This meant that all participating action sports athletes had to participate in the additional X Games qualifying events.  During this time too, X Games had road shows to help advertise the event.  Shows were held in places like Disneyland Paris, France together with Eurosport.

From that time on up to today, it is quite clear how X Games evolved to not just a simple sporting event for action sports athlete but also to a brand that would be followed by many enthusiasts.  You will be surprised how the X Games are becoming popular to youngsters too.  With today’s technology, X Games video games are available in Play Station as well as in Nintendo Wii.  X Games in deed changed ways in the sporting arena in so many ways with just less than 20 years of history.
