Repainting Your BMX Bike

If you are a bike enthusiast and you are especially into BMX bikes, you would know that they come in a variety of design, color and type or model.  The model is an important thing to consider as this determines what functions it can do.  So if you have specific needs as a rider, your most important consideration is the model.

Although BMX bikes have been in existence for decades now, they are still the quality brand to look out for when it comes to bikes, and are still gaining ground in popularity among newer bike lovers.

BMX bikes are known to be sturdy and may last you several years or even decades.  If you’ve had yours for several years now, it won’t be surprising if you are already bored of the color it originally came in and would probably wish to change it somehow.  One way is to put on stickers and decals, which most people do to personalize their BMX bike.  Another way is to repaint the frame.

The following are the steps you need to take when you are considering repainting the frame of your precious BMX bike yourself:

  1. Remove the old paint by using sand paper.  Strip off the old paint first to ensure an even, smooth surface for painting.  Using sand paper is the choice for most, as it actually gives better results than stripper compounds.  Try to remove most of the scratches on your bike, and sanding it helps in doing this.
  2. Make sure to place a cardboard behind and under the frame while you are painting your BMX bike.  This cardboard will prevent any paint from splattering onto your walls and on the floor.
  3. Clean your bike well.  A clean bike frame is easier to paint than a dusty one, and you won’t end up with a rough paint job that incorporated a lot of dust into the paint.
  4. Try to separate the parts if you can, so that the color will be complete.  You don’t really want unpainted patches on your bike frame, due to difficulty in pointing the paint spray onto hidden bike parts.
  5. If there is not one color you prefer, you can mix up colors to get the exact shade you want.
  6. Spraying on the paint gets the best effect.  Make sure the can of paint is inches away from your BMX parts and frame.
  7. The best effect of spraying paint is to do a couple of coats.  If you notice that some parts are not applied equally, make sure to wet sand these parts before the second coat application.

By following these steps, you’ll have a “brand new” BMX bike in no time!
